Caerphilly Farmers Hunt, as it was originally called, was formed around 1949, using pure Welsh Hounds which were trencher fed by a number of local farmers, used for their own sport and to aid fox control, as all the farmers kept sheep.
After many years, it was decided to raise funds to purchase land and build the kennels at their present location, thus, the hunt became the only pack in the area to own its own kennels.
Although not registered with the MFHA, and therefore a Private Pack, The Caerphilly operate according to and obeying MFHA rules, and are affiliated with the Federation of Welsh Packs. We are a committee run hunt, and have no Masters.
Caerphilly and District Hunt, has remained small and friendly, and has had some success at the Wales and Border Hound Show, most notably with Champion Stallion Hound, Bristol '94. This success resulted in an invitation for inclusion in Baileys Hunting Directory, which brought the hunt to a much wider notice.
CDH is very proud of its history, and considers its Boxing Day meet at the dominating Caerphilly Castle in the town centre, to be the most picturesque in the whole of Wales. Literally, hundreds of people are attracted to watch the hounds and field move off through the streets.
The hunt has been in existence for over 60 years, which is nothing to some of the larger shire packs, but we have weathered many a storm, and feel confident that in another 60 years, there will still be a devoted group following our beloved Welsh Hounds.
